Imhotep – the world’s first architect and builder

Imhotep, one of ancient Egypt's most celebrated figures, was far more than a mere architect. He was a visionary polymath whose contributions to architecture, engineering and medicine earned him an enduring legacy that has spanned millennia. The Step Pyramid of Djoser, located in Saqqara, (pictured above) remains Imhotep's most celebrated achievement. Prior to this architectural marvel, tombs in Egypt were primarily constructed as mastabas - flat-roofed, rectangular structures made of mudbrick. Imhotep’s revolutionary design transformed the traditional mastaba into a stepped structure comprising six stacked tiers, creating the world’s first pyramid.

One of Imhotep’s most groundbreaking contributions was the use of stone as a primary construction material. While earlier structures relied heavily on mudbrick, Imhotep recognised the durability and permanence of limestone. The Step Pyramid was constructed using finely cut blocks of limestone, setting a precedent for all subsequent monumental Egyptian architecture, including the Great Pyramids of Giza, pictured below.

Imhotep also introduced advanced construction techniques, such as the use of architectural blueprints and models. He planned the pyramid with meticulous precision, employing a grid system that ensured the alignment and symmetry of the structure. These innovations not only enhanced the aesthetic quality of the Step Pyramid but also contributed to its structural integrity, enabling it to withstand the ravages of time.

Symbolism and religious significance

The Step Pyramid was more than just a tomb - it was a spiritual and symbolic structure designed to facilitate Pharaoh Djoser’s ascension to the afterlife. His writings, though lost to history, were referenced in later Egyptian medical papyri, such as the Edwin Smith Papyrus, which details surgical procedures and anatomical observations.

Imhotep’s medical practices included the use of herbs, surgical techniques, and remedies for ailments such as wounds and fractures. His holistic approach to health and healing elevated the status of medicine in ancient Egypt, influencing subsequent generations of physicians.

As the High Priest of Heliopolis, Imhotep held a prominent position in Egyptian religious life. He was deeply involved in the worship of Ra, the sun god and his work reflected a profound understanding of astronomy and cosmology. The precise alignment of the Step Pyramid and its surrounding structures demonstrates Imhotep’s knowledge of celestial movements, which played a critical role in Egyptian religious rituals and calendar systems.


Imhotep’s contributions were so significant that he was posthumously deified, a rare honour for a commoner in ancient Egypt. He was worshipped as a god of wisdom, medicine and architecture. Temples dedicated to Imhotep were constructed, and he was often invoked in prayers and healing rituals. His cult persisted for centuries, even during the Ptolemaic period, when he was equated with the Greek god Asclepius, the deity of medicine and healing.
