Smart connections for a smarter planet
As sustainability continues to drive change across industries, Pulse Fibre is urging the broadband sector to rethink its approach to infrastructure development. Despite advancements in technology and increasing awareness of environmental impact, major network operators, including giants like Openreach, continue to invest in new cabling infrastructure for Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) installations – even when perfectly functional existing infrastructure is available.
This practice not only increases cost but also contributes to unnecessary carbon emissions. Climate change is a pressing concern and leveraging existing cabling infrastructure offers a smarter, more sustainable alternative.
Pulse Fibre has been working to highlight the resource-intensive process behind the installation of new internet cabling, from the extraction of raw materials to the logistical challenges of installation. These steps significantly increase carbon footprints, but often existing cabling infrastructure is prematurely disregarded, despite being fully capable of supporting current and future internet demands.
The redundant deployment of duplicate fibre-optic networks is known as overbuilding. This not only drives up costs and increases road disruption, but it also threatens competition within the broadband sector.
As the demand for high-speed, reliable internet grows, Pulse Fibre is calling for the broadband industry to adopt more sustainable strategies, such as the enhanced use of existing infrastructure and the deployment of more environmentally friendly networks.
By focusing on smarter connections and sustainable practices, the industry can not only meet the growing demand for high-speed internet but also protect the planet for future generations.
