Award-Winning terrazzo floor anchors new US Naval Academy Alumni Centre

  •

The United States Naval Academy's prestigious new Fluegel Alumni Center boasts a stunning terrazzo floor that pays homage to the Academy's rich history while offering a modern aesthetic. Roman Mosaic & Tile Company, the terrazzo contractor behind the project, recently received a national award for their exceptional craftsmanship.

Designed by Perkins Eastman, the Fluegel Alumni Center is built to withstand the test of time, both literally and figuratively. The terrazzo floor, a focal point of the lobby, reflects this vision. "We wanted timeless and classic materials," said Ben Scarbro of Perkins Eastman, "and terrazzo's durability and easy maintenance made it perfect for this high-traffic area."

The poured-in-place terrazzo floor features the Naval Academy's signature navy blue and gold colors in a symmetrical design. The centrepiece is a customised inlay of the academy seal, all crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Skilled artisans even hand-shaped the brass divider strips on-site.

Roman Mosaic & Tile Company, a family-owned business with a rich history dating back to 1902, has been a member of the National Terrazzo & Mosaic Association (NTMA) since 1927. Their dedication to quality craftsmanship is evident in the award-winning floor at the Fluegel Alumni Center.

The NTMA's Honor Award program recognizes outstanding terrazzo projects, and the Naval Academy floor exemplifies the artistry and technical expertise within the terrazzo industry. The NTMA promotes terrazzo not only for its beauty and durability but also for its sustainable qualities. Originally developed by Venetian artisans who reused discarded stone chips, terrazzo offers a unique combination of design flexibility and environmental responsibility.

This award-winning floor at the US Naval Academy's Fluegel Alumni Center stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of terrazzo, its ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modern design, and the dedication of skilled artisans who continue to bring this timeless material to life.
