Sleeping in the world’s first underwater hotel
Imagine waking up to stingrays gliding past your window instead of bustling city streets. This aquatic dream isn't science fiction - it's a reality at the Muraka, the world's first underwater hotel residence nestled in the crystal-clear waters of the Maldives.
Opened in 2018, the Muraka breaks boundaries both architecturally and conceptually. This two-story wonder sits 16ft below the Indian Ocean's surface, offering guests a front-row seat to the breathtaking marine life of the Maldivian reefs.
It’s literally a submerged masterpiece - a cocoon of contemporary comfort suspended in the turquoise embrace of the ocean. The Muraka's two levels offer 6,000 square feet of space, encompassing a living room, bedroom, bathroom, and even a private observation deck overlooking the underwater panorama. Acrylic walls act as windows to the reef, blurring the lines between human and aquatic worlds.
Building underwater requires meticulous planning and eco-conscious execution. The Muraka was prefabricated in Singapore and then transported by a special ship to the Maldives. Divers meticulously anchored the structure onto concrete pilings, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Sustainability is key here, with solar panels and energy-efficient systems minimising the hotel's carbon footprint.
The Muraka is a testament to human ingenuity and our fascination with the ocean's mysteries. It challenges our perception of luxury travel, offering a unique connection with nature that few hotels can match. It's a chance to see the world from a new perspective, a reminder that there are wonders hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered.
