UK’s top bricklayers compete for Super Trowel 2024

  •

Showcasing the incredible flair the construction industry has to offer, Super Trowel 2024’s grand final saw 12 of the UK’s best bricklayers competing in the annual exhibition of speed, professionalism, and skill.

This year’s event, held at Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes on Thursday August 8th, brought together some of the finest talents in the construction industry to compete for the title of the UK’s Fastest Bricklayer.

In addition to the winning the title of UK’s Best Bricklayer and the Keyfix-sponsored Golden Trowel Award, the winner took home a prize worth £15,000, plus a paid trip to Las Vegas to represent the UK at the SPEC MIX Bricklayer 500 competition! The prize was hard-earned, with the finalists not only having to lay the most bricks but also make sure they were laid precisely and accurately. Any bricks damaged, out of place, or not level would see points deducted.

Alongside shining a spotlight on many of the talented individuals who are currently thriving in the construction industry, Super Trowel UK 2024 also hosted a hustling and bustling marketplace that featured more than 60 exhibitors. For everyone who attended, it was the ideal place to network with other industry professionals, learn about new innovations and technologies, and engage with well-known industry brands.

As the sponsor of the highly sought-after Golden Trowel Award and the exclusive VIP Balcony Area, Keyfix was thrilled to see more than 1,500 visitors supporting the event.

For the second consecutive year, the title of the UK’s Fastest Bricklayer and winner of the Golden Trowel Award for most bricks laid within the hour, was won by Charlie Collison and his hod carrier Tom Marcus, who laid over 700 bricks in just 60 minutes. Seeing off strong competition from Ewan Habberfield in second, and Ash Mahoney in third, Charlie not only earned himself of the UK’s Fastest Bricklayer along with significant prizes, but he also earned the opportunity to represent the UK in a global bricklaying competition in the USA.

Ewan took home £2,500 cash and a £500 Jewson voucher, while Ash scooped £1,000 cash and a £250 Jewson voucher. All other contestants received a £100 Jewson voucher each, so nobody went home empty-handed!

A Lifetime Achievement Award was also given to Head Judge Peter Roberts. Meanwhile, the UK’s Best Hod Carrier, Lee Dawson, took home £1,000 in cash for having the fastest loading out and cleanest work space. Ben Ellis, of Lee Marley Brickwork, also fought off strong opposition to win the Apprentice competition and will represent the UK in the Junior Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 contest in Las Vegas.

John Duffin, Managing Director at Keyfix, took great pride in being able to sponsor not only the Golden Trowel award but also the exclusive VIP Balcony Area. He said: “It was a superb event, one we were absolutely delighted to be sponsors of. Congratulations to Charlie for winning the Keyfix-sponsored Golden Trowel award – laying over 700 bricks in 60 minutes is an incredible achievement!

“A huge thank you to not only the organisers of Super Trowel for giving us the opportunity to be a sponsor but also to those we met and networked with. Thanks also goes to some of the other members of the Keystone Group, namely Keystone Lintels, IG Masonry Support, and Keywall, for joining us and exhibiting their product innovations.

“We’re already looking forward to Super Trowel 2025. It’s shaping up to be the biggest and best yet!”
