NorDan shines spotlight on sustainability in its latest CPD

  •

As a company that takes pride in enhancing energy efficiency and driving innovation across the fenestration sector, NorDan presented its latest insightful and thought-provoking CPD on sustainability and the significant advantages of specifying aluminium-clad timber at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week.

With NorDan’s stunning London showroom welcoming hundreds of leading decision-makers, architects, developers and innovators during the three-day event, the fenestration experts took the opportunity to shine a crucial spotlight on the pivotal role the windows and doors sector has to play in decarbonising the built environment.

Presented by Tom O’Sullivan, Technical Specification Advisor at NorDan, the informative CPD provided the myriad of guests with a background of NorDan’s 100-year history, evidence of its sourcing of timber from sustainably managed European forests, critical information on its specialist vacuum impregnation process, and an example of how its aluminium-clad timber frames had been utilised on a 1,700-bedroom Passivhaus student accommodation project.

With embodied carbon increasingly becoming a vital focus for developers, architects and anyone overseeing a construction project in the UK, the CPD detailed the critical need for the implementation of specific project Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) – as opposed to product-specific alternatives. Tom highlighted how project-specific EPDs tailor environmental impact data to specific project parameters, removing the use of conservative estimates found in standard EPDs and enabling precise, trusted calculations.

Emphasising the importance of increasing awareness of the fenestration sector’s crucial role in reducing carbon emission in the built environment, Tom revealed the CPD presentation had generated some encouraging feedback. He said: “It was an honour to present NorDan’s latest CPD and it was good to shine a spotlight on how the organisation is driving innovation in the construction industry.

“There were plenty of architects and other key decision-makers asking questions about how NorDan’s aluminium-clad timber windows and doors can be effectively utilised in both new build and retrofitting projects across the UK; especially with sustainability and energy efficiency targets in mind.

“We all have a major role to play in decarbonising the UK’s built environment and it was encouraging to share plenty of insight and discuss how NorDan has not only shaped the past but is leading the way forward, too.”

Celebrating its centenary year, NorDan is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of timber and aluminium-clad timber windows, doors and smart accessories. Over the years, it has developed and enhanced its reputation for quality, aesthetics and performance, designing cutting-edge solutions with an ideal balance of sustainability, longevity and modern architecture demands in mind.

With sustainability equally as important as building safety and quality, the informative CPD provides critical information that drives decision-making, ultimately leading to a more energy efficient and greener built environment.
