New consumer guide for spray foam insulation

A new consumer guide offering clear, practical information about spray foam insulation in domestic roofs has been published, developed through a collaboration involving Insulation Manufacturers Association (IMA) and a range of experts from across the property, finance and surveying sectors.

With rising energy costs and increasing awareness of energy efficiency, spray foam insulation remains a proven method of improving the performance of homes and buildings. When correctly installed, spray foam offers excellent thermal efficiency and durability, contributing to reduced heat loss and lower carbon emissions.

The new consumer guide has been created to help homeowners make informed decisions about their spray foam installations and understand what to do if they have questions or concerns. It outlines what to expect from a quality installation, what signs to look for if issues arise and where to seek expert, trusted advice.

Commenting on the consumer guide, Simon Storer, Chief Executive of Insulation Manufacturers Association, said: “Spray foam is a highly effective insulation product with a long track record of successful use when installed professionally and in accordance with certified standards. This new consumer guide ensures that homeowners are equipped with the right knowledge to recognise good practice, understand the process and know where to turn for credible, specialist support.”

The guide also highlights the importance of working with competent, trained professionals and helps ensure homeowners have the right information should they need to refinance, sell, or simply better understand their insulation.

This builds on previous work by IMA to raise awareness of best practice across the industry. It complements the Code of Practice for the Installation of Polyurethane Spray Foam (SPF) in domestic roofs and Inspection Protocol for building professionals who are asked to consider spray polyurethane foam that has been applied to the pitched elevations of domestic roofs, both developed in collaboration with spray foam manufacturers, surveyors, lenders, and industry experts. These documents have been instrumental in bringing consistency and confidence to how spray foam is assessed and installed.

All IMA members’ products are independently tested and certified by UKAS-accredited bodies (either BBA or KIWA-BDA certification), and the consumer guide reinforces the importance of using approved contractors and adhering to proper installation procedures.

The consumer guide has been developed with contributions from leading organisations including the Residential Property Surveyors Association (RPSA), Bangor University, the Property Care Association (PCA), Andy Wilson Financial Services, and RPC, with further input from surveyors, finance specialists, and technical experts.
