GRS wins Deeside roads and sewers job after pumping station delivery

  •

GRS Contractors is on site again in Deeside after winning the roads and sewers package on the H4 parcel of the Airfields development for housebuilders Anwyl Homes and Bellway Homes, following its impressive work on the site's pumping station.

The North Wales site compound is being set up now with the package covering 1,215 metres of pipe and 3,429 square metres of road. The win was earned on the successful delivery of the expert work GRS did on the Deeside  pumping station – a job the housebuilders were told couldn’t be done – but GRS did it.

GRS installed its eight metre deep precast concrete wet well, every ring section and the cap, with a three-man crew who have 77 years in civils between them. Anwyl and Bellway saw the result and gave GRS the next stage.

Tom Keane, MD and owner of GRS Contractors, said: “Plenty of contractors talk about building to a standard. We hit the mark on every job, and the wet well at Deeside proves it. Anwyl and Bellway saw that and trusted us with the roads and sewers. We’re delighted to be working with them on this new scheme and we’re totally focused on a delivery which will yield the same results.”

Roads and sewers are what GRS is known for, although now the Merseyside based business is doing full packaged works including foundations and plot work.

The foul water sewers at Deeside are the challenging part. They run up to four metres deep and come with complex dewatering, which means pumping groundwater out of the trench so crews can lay pipe in the dry. GRS will install 545 metres of 150mm pipe.

Surface water drainage takes up 670 metres of pipe, up to three metres deep. That is 570 metres of 450mm concrete pipe and 100 metres of plastic pipe from 150mm to 225mm.

Adam Ormesher, operations manager at GRS, said: “Laying pipe four metres down with groundwater to deal with is skilled work. We will plan the dewatering carefully, so it goes in right first time. We have experienced site teams that have been doing this type of work for decades, so we’re well equipped to deal with what we find.”

GRS is busy across the North West and North Wales, and has more sites to come.
