DYWIDAG collaboration opens route to smarter, faster rail safety measures
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between DYWIDAG and rail safety technologies experts Dual Inventive will explore the integration of infrastructure condition monitoring with operational railway protection technologies.
The collaboration will examine how validated infrastructure monitoring events, generated by DYWIDAG's Infrastructure Intelligence platform, can be securely and automatically linked to the protection measures delivered by Dual Inventive's MTinfo 3000 operational system. The aim is to reduce the time between detecting a potentially catastrophic infrastructure event and implementing operational safeguards. The initial focus of the work will be embankment instability monitoring.
Marc Ó Dálaigh, DYWIDAG Regional Director for UK and Ireland, said: “DYWIDAG’s Infrastructure Intelligence platform is built around a simple idea: connect, analyse, act. Validated data is only useful if it leads to action quickly enough to matter. Partnering with Dual Inventive lets us extend that principle onto the operational railway itself, linking what our platform detects directly to the protection measures that keep people safe. It's a natural next step in making infrastructure safer, stronger and smarter, and we're looking forward to developing it with a partner who shares that focus."
DYWIDAG's Infrastructure Intelligence already connects sensor data, analysis and decision support for asset owners and operators across multiple sectors, including rail. The Dual Inventive collaboration expands that model by validating an infrastructure event and feeding it directly into the operational systems that safeguard the railway in real time.
Under the proposed approach, monitoring data would be validated within Infrastructure Intelligence before a secure trigger message is sent to MTinfo 3000. Predefined protection measures could then be initiated in line with agreed operational rules. Operational decisions would remain governed by railway rules and appropriate authorisation processes throughout – this collaboration is focused on accelerating the steps that follow a validated event, rather than replacing the governance around them.
Both companies view this coordination as a potential foundation for wider-ranging integration between infrastructure monitoring and operational protection systems, helping infrastructure managers respond more effectively to emerging risks while upholding the highest standards of safety and governance. By demonstrating what connected, modern systems can achieve, the work will also support more informed technology decisions based on operational performance, long-term value and future requirements, rather than upfront cost considerations.

Josh Jackson, Managing Director at Dual Inventive, said: “The railway industry has made significant progress in monitoring infrastructure assets, but there can still be a gap between detecting a problem and applying protection on the operational railway. Our collaboration with DYWIDAG is about exploring how technology can help close that gap.
“By
connecting validated monitoring intelligence with protection systems, we have
the opportunity to improve response times, strengthen safety and support more
resilient railway operations.”
