CPI Euromix road user scheme drives home safety message
CPI EuroMix continues to promote road safety through its Vulnerable Road User Scheme highlighting the dangers of HGV vehicles to primary school children.
The long-established initiative ties in with Road Safety Week, a nationwide campaign which this year takes place between November 19th and 25th. CPI’s year-round road safety scheme has proved a huge success. It involves primary schools attending one of the dry mortar specialist’s local sites for a day of activities to help children become ‘road savvy’.
Stuart Russell, commercial manager at CPI EuroMix said: “As a leading dry mortar manufacturer, HGV vehicles are a staple part of our business. Therefore, our Vulnerable Road User Scheme has real relevance to our day-to-day operations, and individuals in our communities. Raising awareness of the potential perils posed by lorries and other large vehicles is paramount to child safety. The scheme benefits CPI EuroMix and those taking part: young individuals have an enjoyable day of learning lessons that will hopefully stay with them for life, and CPI colleagues take great satisfaction in facilitating such a worthwhile event and outcome.”
CPI’s Vulnerable Road User Scheme is designed to help children become more familiar with all aspects of its HGV fleet. This will enable them to recognise vehicle safety features that alert pedestrians to a HGV’s presence. The scheme, which is fully-funded by CPI EuroMix, is entertaining for children, as well as enlightening. It includes an immersive session on stopping distances, and pupils being given the chance to sit in a CPI LPG vehicle to get a driver’s-eye-view of the road. There is also a road safety poster competition, with a prize on offer to the child whose design is considered the best.
To give schools a flavour of what to expect from a Vulnerable Road User session, CPI recorded Highgate Primary Academy’s visit to the company’s Goldthorpe plant earlier this year. The short film shows children learning about HGV stopping distances, driver-pedestrian blind spots, and taking turns to sit in the driver’s cab. The session, hosted by Dale Johnson, Shift Manager; Mark Sykes, Tanker Driver, and Karl Brooke, Plant Manager, is available to view here via YouTube.
According to road safety charity Brake, which runs Road Safety Week, more than 3,400 children aged seven or under were killed or injured on Britain’s roads in 2022 – equivalent to nine young children being killed or injured each day. It’s why CPI’s Vulnerable Road User Scheme is particularly beneficial to children in their formative years.
Dunrobin Primary School in Airdrie took part in CPI’s scheme earlier this year. Head Teacher, Laura Wallace, said it was a day very well spent. “It was an experience that the children will not forget. I can thoroughly recommend the Vulnerable Road User Scheme for any age group. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to be part of it. Thank you, CPI, for inviting us.”
