How to install a new toilet
Cracked porcelain or a toilet that simply needs replacing, then take back control of your bath room with this thorough guide to installing a new toilet yourself.
Before You Begin
- Measure and Match: Ensure your new toilet's rough-in distance (the distance between the wall and the centre of the waste pipe) aligns with your existing flange.
- Gather Your Tools: Prepare a bucket, rags, tape measure, pencil, adjustable wrench, pliers, caulk/silicon gun, and a new wax ring. For connections, grab the new toilet supply line and corresponding connectors.
- Turn Off the Water: Locate the valve behind the toilet, typically near the floor, and turn it clockwise until water supply ceases. Flush the toilet to drain the tank.
Taking out the old toilet
- Disconnect the Plumbing: Use your wrench to loosen the nut connecting the supply line to the tank, catching any water in a bucket. Disconnect the remaining line from the flush valve with pliers.
- Unscrew the Bolts: Locate the two closet bolts at the base of the toilet and, using your wrench, unscrew the nuts holding them in place. Carefully lift the toilet straight up and set it aside in a padded location.
- Inspection: Inspect the flange for cracks or damage. If necessary, replace it before proceeding.
Preparing the new toilet
- Wax Ring Ritual: Place the new wax ring, funnel side down, onto the flange, ensuring it creates a complete seal. Press firmly but avoid tearing the ring.
- Toilet Placement: Lower the new toilet straight down onto the flange, carefully aligning the bolt holes with the closet bolts. Gently rock the toilet back and forth to seat the wax ring.
Reconnecting the plumbing
- Bolting back the Toilet: Insert the closet bolts through the holes and screw on the nuts from underneath the toilet. Tighten them snugly but avoid over-torquing.
- Rebuilding the Water Line: Attach the new supply line to the tank inlet and the shut-off valve using the provided connectors. Tighten securely with your wrench.
- Water Test: Slowly turn on the shut-off valve and check for leaks at all connections. Tighten any loose points if necessary. Flush the toilet and ensure proper filling and draining.
The finishing touches
- Caulk/Silcon the Border: Apply a bead of caulk/silicon around the base of the toilet where it meets the floor, creating a waterproof seal and seamless finish.
- The seat: Install the seat and lid according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- It’s done: Step back and admire your handiwork! Your bathroom has been conquered, and your porcelain palace awaits.
